Hebridean Sheep

Hebridean Sheep are small black sheep from Scotland originated in St. Kilda. They are a multi-horned breed which means that both, ewes and rams, may have two or more horns. Due to their relatively small size (fully grown ewes weigh around 40kg) more sheep can be kept per hectare with still keeping the damage to the pasture to a minimum. Their hard black hooves are less susceptible to foot problems even in wet conditions.

As a primitive breed, Hebridean are low maintenance and hardy. They thrive on rough grazing and are ideal on our farm for scrub control, having a strong preference for browsing. This selective eating also leads to dark, succulent and rich flavoured meat with a minimum of fat. We sell Orkney Hebridean Meat Boxes here.

Hebridean Sheep have black course wool which often fades to different shades brown at the tips, other ones becomes grey even already at a young age which makes it popular for making durable felted rugs. If you are interested please have a look at our sister business Hackland Wool Shed here.
